Chiropractic Manipulation

What exactly is a chiropractic manipulation?

Well, a chiropractic manipulation has several definitions. Let’s start with a definition of the word itself: chiropractic. Chiropractic means “done by hand.” A more scientific term for what chiropractors do is called spinal manipulative treatment or spinal manipulative therapy. Some chiropractic manipulations are done with your hands, while others are done with instruments. Other chiropractic manipulations involve what researchers have termed high velocity, low amplitude thrust into joints. And still other chiropractic manipulations involve symptom mobilization of joints in a much more gentle manner.

What is the whole point in using a chiropractic manipulation in the first place?

The easiest way of putting it is to say that spinal joint pain is a mechanical pain and it makes sense that mechanical pains respond better to mechanical treatment rather than chemical treatment.

Another way to put it is that spinal pain is a movement-related pain and responds better to movement-related treatment.

That is an easy way to explain why chiropractic manipulation is so incredibly effective while also making a statement in regards to the reason muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories, and painkillers especially opioids, are typically ineffective for treating back and neck pain.

Research has shown that spinal manipulative therapy is as effective or more effective than physical therapy, opioids, and regular over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen or Tylenol.

Spinal manipulative therapy, also called chiropractic manipulation, is now recommended as a first line therapy for acute and chronic low back pain by the American College of physicians.

That’s just for starters.

A whole slew of organizations from the FDA, CDC, joint commission, The Lancet medical journal, and even the White House now recommend spinal manipulation as a first-line therapy for back pain. Even JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, published two papers in 2017 showing the effectiveness of chiropractic manipulation.

And when they say spinal manipulative therapy, what they are really saying is “chiropractic manipulation.”

The reason we say this is because chiropractors perform over 90% of spinal manipulative therapies in the United States.

Chiropractic is Stepping Up

Chiropractic manipulation is now emerging as the number one treatment for neck and back pain that is not only significantly and shockingly effective, but is safe, non-pharmacological, and non-invasive.

In addition, chiropractic manipulations are performed by trained, highly educated, and fully licensed Doctors of Chiropractic. Chiropractors have been trained in every basic sciences course that one finds in a medical school. Classes like Histology, Cell Biology, Bone Pathology, Radiology, Systemic Anatomy, Gross Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Neurology just to make a handful. Chiropractors had to pass 4 parts of the national boards and must remain in good standing with their State Board.

After 8 years of school, you can trust a chiropractic manipulation and you can trust your Doctor if Chiropractic.
